An arts and cultural hot spot on Sydney’s glittering waterfront.
Announcing Pier 2/3 at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct now open to the public.
Completed by Infrastructure NSW, the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct project has received numerous accolades and awards:
The prestigious NSW Architecture Medallion, Public Architecture Award, Greenway Award for Heritage and a commendation for Interior Architecture at the 2022 NSW Architecture Awards
2022 Industry Choice Award at the 2021-22 Annual Infrastructure Oration and National Infrastructure Awards
2022 National Trust Heritage Awards for Conservation-Built Heritage.
After two years of construction, Richard Crookes Constructions has transformed Pier 2/3 from an empty wool store to a premium 21st century space for theatre and music performance. Combined with Wharf 4/5, which was complete in 2020, this premier arts precinct establishes Sydney’s reputation as a global player in the arts sector.
The Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Theatre for Young People and Bell Shakespeare have moved into their new premises at Pier 2/3, joining arts companies already operating at Wharf 4/5:
Sydney Theatre Company
Sydney Dance Company
Bangarra Dance Theatre
Sydney Philharmonia Choirs
Gondwana Choirs
The Song Company
Did you know?
Working over water on an over 100-year-old pier presented unique construction challenges for the project team to overcome. An extensive program of structural strengthening of the pier paved the way for new state-of-the-art facilities that are acoustically sound and tailored to the needs of each resident art company.
Some interesting facts about the construction at Pier 2/3:
Around 280 kilometres of electrical cabling have been installed, - that's the equivalent to the distance between Sydney and Canberra!
The pier has had a face-lift with 18,000 litres of new paint.
Nearly 1,000 tonnes of steel have been installed to provide strength and structure.
To increase usable space, large sections of the roof in the central valleys have been raised to facilitate more room for lighting and sound equipment inside the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Australian Theatre for Young People performance spaces.
Retractable seating banks have been installed in the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Bell Shakespeare performance spaces to allow for multiple seating configurations for flexibility in performances.
Nearly 300 state-of the-art solar panels have been installed on the roof.
