Forever Country - Parramatta North is a place of stories. A place where past lessons fuel future opportunities. Culturally significant, community inspired and economically vibrant, Parramatta North will bring to life old buildings, new spaces and ideas, in a place of discovery, opportunity, reflection and experience.
The Parramatta North Heritage Core precinct is a site of significant Aboriginal and colonial heritage. The precinct’s rich and complex history forms an intrinsic part of its place identity. It is recognised that Parramatta North is a site of living history and memory for many people, particularly those with connections to the numerous institutions that operated on site, including community groups, mental health clients and their families as well as staff and volunteers who are connected to this place in some way.
The NSW Government has prepared a comprehensive Place Vision for the site based on four Place Principles - including First Peoples First, Active Memory, Sustainable and Everybody’s Welcome.
We are now preparing a revised Final Business Case for the Heritage Core, which will inform the 10 year program of conservation, sensitive development and tenancy and activation activities to achieve the Heritage Core Place Vision.
We are also working with key stakeholders including the City of Parramatta Council, Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council, Parragirls, Parramatta Female Factory Friends, Parramatta Parklands, National Trust and other landholders and organisations with connections to the site to create a long-term strategy for the heritage core and to manage short term use and activation.
The adaptive reuse for the Heritage Core is being informed by a Registration of Interest (ROI) process to help identify uses, programs, services and activities in relation to buildings and open space. The ROI identified a demonstrated need to provide:
This process was completed in June 2019 and a recommendation report has been made to Government. The findings will inform a Tenancy and Activation Strategy addressing both short and long-term activation and tenancy strategies for the site.
In March 2019 the NSW Government announced an election commitment for a Western Sydney Start up Hub for Western Sydney Businesses, located in the Parramatta North Heritage Core. The intent is to fit out existing government buildings within the Heritage Core as a co-working start-up hub with subsidised work spaces. 1500m2 of start-up space is required, supported with a café and function space – and all helping to bring life and activation to this extraordinary precinct.
