Infrastructure Digitalisation Program

Digitalising how capital projects are developed, procured and delivered, and how infrastructure assets are operated and maintained is a key enabler for Government to achieve its priorities. This includes increasing housing, decarbonising infrastructure delivery and advancing the domestic market. The Infrastructure Digitalisation Program is particularly important in an environment of declining construction sector productivity, increasing labour shortages, ongoing cost escalation and budget constraints.

The Infrastructure Digitalisation Program

The Infrastructure Digitalisation Program will accelerate the adoption of digital technologies, processes, and systems to enhance productivity, service quality, and social and environmental outcomes across the infrastructure lifecycle. The integration of advanced technology will:

  • Allow project information and material to be more easily shared and reused across government, thereby reducing rework and supporting more standard designs and the adoption of modern methods of construction.
  • Enable more accurate project cost estimates and schedules, reduce delivery risks and create opportunities for greater efficiencies of scale, notably in the procurement phases.
  • Support more effective asset management decision-making and improve use of the existing physical asset base.

The Infrastructure Digitalisation Program will leverage best practice for infrastructure data and information management to create a consistent approach to digitalisation and ensure that digital systems supporting built infrastructure are secure, interoperable, and adaptable to the evolving demands of the community and sector.

Infrastructure Digitalisation Roadmap

To support the digitalisation of future and existing State assets, in November 2022 the NSW Government released the NSW Roadmap for digitalising planning, design, construction and operation of infrastructure.

Next Steps

The Infrastructure Digitalisation Program will establish a comprehensive framework for government, encompassing policies and guidelines and capability uplift initiatives, to drive digital transformation in the infrastructure sector.

Collaboration will be critical to the success Infrastructure Digitalisation Program. The program will leverage best practices and lessons from government agencies, industry, and academia to make digitalisation a standard practice.
