Expert advice

Infrastructure NSW is an expert advisor to the NSW Government on the state’s infrastructure needs and priorities. We provide rigorous and independent advice to prioritise infrastructure investment. Our role is central to the NSW Government’s ambitious infrastructure program, which will see $68.6 billion over the next four years invested in better public transport and roads, modern schools and hospitals, and renewed sports and cultural infrastructure. About another $20 billion will be released under the Rebuilding NSW Plan, further boosting the vibrancy and competitiveness of our state.

One of our primary tasks is to develop the State Infrastructure Strategy, a 20-year infrastructure plan that places strategic fit and economic merit at the centre of investment decisions. In 2014, the NSW Premier asked Infrastructure NSW to update the 20-year strategy to guide how the proceeds from the Rebuilding NSW initiative could be spent. We put our recommendations to Government, which were accepted in full and published its response Rebuilding NSW – State Infrastructure Strategy 2014. In addition to delivering the State Infrastructure Strategy, Infrastructure NSW’s functions include:

  • preparing annual Five Year Infrastructure Plans, which identify specific major infrastructure projects to be undertaken as a priority
  • providing specialist advice to the NSW Government on specific infrastructure initiatives by government agencies or the private sector
  • managing the state’s engagement with the federal government to ensure coordination of priorities.

Through Infrastructure NSW, robust assessment, independent assurance and long term planning informs all infrastructure investment decisions for the state.
